My Burka and Me

Voices Beneath the Veil. Unveiling the layers of silence and strength.

A touching performance by Dr. Huda Hashimi on the 29.11.24 during the Mahalla Festivals Event “New Voices from Afghanistan”.

“I am a useless medical Doctor right now. Because I am not allowed” she shares after her performance as a 14years old teenager, who tries to rebel against the orders of the Taliban to wear the Burka, and is silenced by her father and brother.

The Taliban banned women from public lives. The absence of female medical doctors is a huge loss fort her medical care of Afghanistan.

Huda Hashimi is part of the Kite Runner Program’s Women group and the digital story lab.

Kite Runner: Huda, can you give us some information about your engagement for women’s rights?

As a co-founder of the Ayil Social Association, I have played a pivotal role in advocating for women’s social and economic empowerment while combating violence against women.

My leadership in the Afghanistan National Women’s Network (ANWN) has driven impactful initiatives, including the transformative Take Back the Tech! training program, which equipped hundreds of women with digital storytelling skills to amplify their voices.

Now based in Istanbul, Turkey, I am a vital member of the Afghan Women Coordination Body, where we work to coordinate and unite Afghan women globally, advocate for their education and rights, and fight collectively against gender apartheid while amplifying their voices on international platforms. Currently, I am conducting a survey on the lives of Afghan women in Turkey, gathering critical evidence of the violence they face.

With unwavering dedication to advocacy and empowerment, I continue to inspire change, embodying strength and resilience in the pursuit of a more equitable world for women.
