Afghan Poetry: Uranus Musamen

You want to put a label of silence on my mouth

Uranus Musamen is part of a group of young Women Poets in Istanbul, rebelling against the genderapartheid politics of the Taliban in Afghanistan. The graceful protest of the women is sharper than a sword against the suppression of women in Afghanistan.

Her Poetry is deeply influenced by Dschalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, yet it is dazzling contemporary.

“I want that the sky is free, I am a Hawk,” she says, “when men are scared, women get like lions.”

Reading during the event, New Voices from Afghanistan, Mahalla Festival “Memento”, 29.11.2024.

Uranus Musamen: “I graduated from Public Relations and Journalism. I worked with two of the biggest television-stations in Afghanistan, and now I work in print media and have a deep passion for preserving cultural traditions‌.

And I love that part, I write poetry. Regarding the poems in the video, they beautifully capture the essence of our heritage and resonate deeply with cultural pride.”
