Transvestites in Turkey

How socially relevant topics should be covered journalistically.

The draft legislation, leaked to the media in October, which would have imposed prison sentences on anyone found to “engage in, praise, or incite behaviour contrary to biological sex at birth and general morality” in Turkey, was removed from the bill when it reached parliament last week, following public protests and criticism from opposition parties.

Against this background, we will screen a television report by Thomas and Sabine Büsch on transgender people in Istanbul, produced in 2006.

This will be followed by a discussion on how such socially relevant issues can be covered responsibly in journalism and the key considerations this requires.

We look forward to seeing you all online on 6 December at 5:00 pm (Istanbul time).
